3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)*

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a worldwide collaboration between groups of telecommunications standards associations. The project was established in December 1998 with the aim of making a globally applicable third generation (3G) mobile phone system specification based on evolved Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) specifications.

Since its inception, 3GPP has expanded its scope to include the standardization of the fourth generation (4G) LTE and the fifth generation (5G) technologies. The partnership ensures that the standards developed are globally applicable and support interoperability across different regions and manufacturers.

The 3GPP member organizations collaborate to coordinate technical specifications for mobile telecommunications, including 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is one of the seven national Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) that form the 3GPP.

ETSI provides significant technical input and a secretariat for 3GPP, coordinating meetings and handling contribution documents. ATIS (Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions) represents the U.S. in the 3GPP, and there are also SDOs from Japan, South Korea, China, and India. This comprehensive approach allows 3GPP networks to operate in an inter-vendor and inter-operator context, ensuring global interoperability.

3GPP’s plays a significant role in 5G, managing important specification, such as those for Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC), and massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC). These specifications are designed to make it possible for 5G meet the diverse needs of newer applications, from virtual reality and autonomous driving to industrial IoT and smart cities.
